Lily Potter's sacrifice ensured that Harry was a powerful force in this regard, and Voldemort couldn't overcome this. Even though the Dark Lord had taken in some of Lily's protection when he regenerated his body, he still had no understanding of love– something of which Harry had an above-average supply. This was something Voldemort could never understand, and when he possessed Harry, the pain was unbearable.ĭumbledore realized that he had been wrong to think Voldemort could fully possess Harry. Harry's pain at Sirius' death was only the sort that someone who deeply loved someone could experience. Of course, this did not work as he had planned. The Dark Lord had hoped to force Dumbledore to kill Harry in an attempt to kill the Dark Lord Voldemort. When Voldemort appeared at the Ministry of Magic in Order of the Phoenix, he tried to possess Harry, just as Dumbledore feared. However, Dumbledore had a reason for his actions that the movies entirely left out.
Even after he was finally brought to Grimmauld Place and returned to Hogwarts, Dumbledore refused to even look at Harry, adding to his immense frustration.
From the very beginning, during the summer after Cedric Diggory died in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry felt trapped at the Dursleys' house with no news of what was happening in the wizarding world. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is known as Harry's angstiest year, which wasn't helped by Dumbledore's insistence that he remain isolated. However, the Harry Potter books did a far more thorough job of supporting his choices with reasons- whether they were valid or not. The omission meant an entirely different perspective on the film version of Albus Dumbledore, since a great many of his decisions and actions went unexplained. In the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenixbook, Dumbledore confessed the reason he ignored Harry all year, but the movies left this out.
